Harris RF Communications

CBT | Full simulation with language translation

An indepth CBT of a fully functioning radio simulation for training personnel anywhere in the field.

"Having a self-training simulator of this expensive piece of equipment enabled Harris' clients to 'learn' the radio from a relatively inexpensive laptop computer. One real radio was onsite so the students could touch and feel it (buttons, knobs, controls, etc.) without needing to provide each student with a radio."

Harris RF Case Study

Testimony by Travis Piper

The radio trainer/simulator software permitted our client to simplify and improve their training programs for military personnel who needed to become proficient operators of the radio.

Before we created the simulator, each class of military personnel required one radio for each student -- a very expensive proposition for national military forces of countries not having a large military budget.

Creation of the radio trainer/simulator made possible a training environment that could be as simple as a tent with tables and chairs in the middle of a field.

The instructor would show up with a single radio and a box of laptop computers.

Each student would come to the front of the room to "touch and feel" the actual radio, gaining familiarity with what it was like to push the buttons, turn the knobs and see the display.

Classroom training consisted of explaining the next menu item in the training program and telling the class to "try it" on their individual laptops.

VIDEO Demonstrating how the entire radio functioned and described each button, switch, and screen.
VIDEO Each button and knob works exactly as it does on the real radio. If a learner finishes a module early, he/she can try any of the radio's features.

There was full audio (English and Spanish) of all of the on-screen text for those needing help with reading. Some students even chose to have English text with Spanish audio (or vice-versa) as a way of improving their language skills while learning about the radio.

The training is structured in a Demo/Tutorial/Practice progression. The demo is "watch, listen and learn", while the tutorial takes the learner step by step through each process, letting them perform each action along the way.

Finally, the Practice component opens up ALL controls on the radio.

Since the tutorial mode provided immediate reinforcement when errors occurred, the instructor could spend more time with learners needing special assistance as opposed to the simple "I pressed the wrong button" types of questions that used to have the instructor going from learner to learner, taking up precious instructor time.

Quicker learners could learn and practice during the allotted time period for a topic.

Slower learners were patiently taken through the process step by step and took comfort in learning that they could always return to the training later on if needed.
